Overcoming a Stubborn Case of Athlete’s Foot

Comments (0)

You don’t have to be an athlete to get athlete’s foot. The fungus that causes it loves dark, damp, moist environments and spreads through contact with contaminated surfaces—here in Cincinnati, in the middle of the rainy season, walking home in soaked tennis shoes (and not giving them a chance to fully air out before using them again) could be as likely a culprit as any!

The good news with athlete’s foot is that home care is usually more than enough to eradicate a stubborn infection, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take some discipline. Nine times out of ten, when we see a patient with a case of athlete’s foot that’s lasted for months (or longer), the problem was more about a lack of follow-through in treatment rather than a particularly pesky infection, though exceptions certainly exist.

A wide variety of over-the-counter antifungal treatments exist to deal with the fungi that cause the problem. They come in creams, ointments, powders, and sprays—choose which is most comfortable for you. Just remember to follow the directions completely! Most OTC treatments require you to apply twice per day, and may have a full treatment course lasting 2, 4, or sometimes even 6 weeks. Go through the entire process, even if symptoms seem to clear up earlier. You want to be sure the fungus has been completely wiped out, or it could come roaring back.

If even these measures aren’t enough to fully eliminate the issue, stop by Family Foot and Ankle Center and we’ll help you defeat even the most stubborn of cases. In such situations, we typically prescribe a stronger topical or, if necessary, oral antifungal to take out severe infections. Because oral antifungals may come with more serious side effects, we may ask you to come back for a few routine appointments to monitor your condition during treatment.

Don’t keep suffering from itchy, inflamed, irritation athlete’s foot. If the standard treatments aren’t working—after carefully following the directions—please make an appointment with us for professional care. You can request a time to meet with one of our expert podiatrists by filling out our online contact form, or give us a call at 888-689-3317 today.
