Healthy Living with Arthritis in Feet and Ankles

Comments (0)

Walking with Arthritis in Feet and AnklesFew conditions are as frustrating as arthritis in the feet and ankles. You know that you need to exercise and stay active to maintain your health and mobility (and even to improve your arthritis symptoms), but your body actively opposes you with each painful step.

That all said, healthy living with arthritis in the feet and ankles isn’t impossible. Here are some tips from our doctors on managing your pain and getting the most out of life:

Arthritis-Friendly Exercise: Exercise provides many benefits for those with foot or ankle arthritis. For starters, keeping your weight under control reduces the load that arthritis joints need to bear, and second, it strengthens and improves mobility in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons supporting the joint, helping you manage pain better.

To help you get the most out of exercise while minimizing your discomfort, remember to wear comfortable and supportive shoes, stretch thoroughly before and after exercise, and if necessary stick to low-impact for your cardio—biking, walking, swimming, etc. Strength training for your legs is also a great choice.

Healthy Diet: Your tummy isn’t the only beneficiary of good eating. Eating lots of fruits, veggies, fish, and nuts, and getting lots of Vitamin C can help boost joint health, whether your arthritis is the wear-and-tear variety or inflammatory, like RA.

Get Your Feet Checked by a Pro: The podiatrists at Family Foot & Ankle Center have been helping arthritis patients reduce pain and retain active lifestyles for years. We’ll perform a detailed examination of your feet and ask you a number of questions designed to identify the top contributors to your foot and ankle pain, then help you overcome them. Although there’s no cure for arthritis, measures such as physical therapy, custom orthotics, surgical joint repair or replacement, or other techniques may dramatically reduce pain and improve quality of life.
