When It May Be Time to Consider Bunion Surgery

Comments (0)

Bunion SurgeryWe know, we know—some people will wait until they have a limb hanging by a thread before they’ll see a doctor or consider surgery. Many times per week, we see patients who have been living with painful deformities like bunions for years before they finally stop in for an evaluation.

Sound like you? While we definitely don’t want to push a decision on you, the truth is that sometimes surgery for a severe bunion is the best option to get your life back on track.

True, not every bunion requires surgical intervention. In fact, we’ll push you to pursue all your alternatives first. New, more accommodating shoes might help, as could physical therapy, tools like splints or tape (if the toe is still flexible), orthotics, or other options determined by the specific parameters of your condition. But if you’ve been trying these types of solutions for months (or even years) with little improvement, a surgical fix might ultimately be required.

Consider also how your bunion is affecting your life. Is it merely a cosmetic nuisance, or is it causing constant, chronic, significant pain? Do you find yourself withdrawing from activities like shopping, playing with your kids or grandkids, or enjoying outdoor exercise because of the pain? We won’t ever recommend surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, but when quality of life starts to suffer, you may need more options on the table.

True, with surgery you’ll probably be off your feet for at least a few weeks, and you’ll have to carefully follow aftercare procedures. But consider how a few weeks or months of recovery compares to the potential benefit of full delivery from pain and many future years of healthy, mobile, active living. For the vast majority of patients who opt for surgery, the reward is more than worth the cost.

So, is it time for you to choose bunion surgery? That’s a question only you can answer, but fortunately, the team at Family Foot & Ankle Center is here to help you find the best path forward. We provide extensive bunion care, both conservative and surgical, and have six Great Cincinnati locations to serve you. To schedule an appointment, give us a call at 888-689-3317.
